BUDAPEST - Travel Diary

I have decided to put together a mini travel diary of our long weekend in Budapest!

I hope this will be useful for those who want to know cool places to visit, nice shops, where to eat and have a couple ( maybe more :) ) of drinks. There is so much to explore in this beautiful city, so here are just a few tips!

Culture:

Budapest is the capital of Hungary and it is actually made up of 3 unified cities, Buda and Óbuda are on the west bank of the Danube and Pest is located on the east bank. This city is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful capital cities in Europe and a lot of its monuments/parts have been granted the UNESCO World Heritage Site status. You cannot miss:

- The Parliament Building

- Heroes' Square

- Margaret Island - a little island on the Danube, perfect for bike rides & walks

- Danube Promenade

- Hungarian State Opera House

- Fishermen's Bastion

- Buda Castle Hill Funicular

- The Thermal Baths - these are a huge feature of this city. The most popular ones are: Geller Baths and Széchenyi Baths

- Ruin Pubs - these shabby-chic pubs are set up in deserted buildings, which have been filled with cool, worn out and retro furniture. You should definetly try these: Instant, Fogas Ház, Kuplung and Szimpla.

Transportation :

You can easily walk around and explore the whole city without the need of public transports,

but, if you are feeling particularly lazy, the Underground has 4 different Lines and it is fast, clean and super efficient ( Daily Tickets cost around 5 Euros ). Trams are available as well and Taxis are also very cheap.

There is also a Boat Service on the Danube from Spring till Autumn!

Traditional Food :

- Goulash: you simply cannot visit Budapest and not try this warm and comforting dish! It is a sort of "soup" made from meat stew and veggies, seasoned with paprika and other sorts of delish spices for earthy flavors

- Kürtőskalács: this is basically a chimney cake made from sweet yeast then spun and wrapped around a truncated cone-shaped baking material. You can add different flavors to the base, usually they serve it with granulated sugar, caramel, cinnamon and walnuts.

-Rakott Krumpli: this amazing gratin dish is made of layered baked potatoes. It is simple yet absolutely delicious!

- Kolbász: These Hungarian sausages may be boiled, dried or smoked, they can be eaten as cold cuts or accompanied in main dishes like stews and salads. These sausages are so tasty!

Shops :

The main Shopping street in Budapest is called Vàci Utca and it is around 1300 Meters long!

In the Northern part you can find more high-street brands, this part is usually super crowded - avoid the bars/restaurants of this area if you can, they are way too touristy and expensive!

The Southern part has a quieter and more artistic atmosphere, there is a selection of very nice cafès and shops where you can find some great and traditional souvenirs.

There is a big covered Food Market ( Central Market Hall ) available al well if you want to get some traditional food on the go!

I hope some of these tips can be useful for your future trip,

You absolutely HAVE to visit Budapest! :)
